We authors face many challenges. One of them is all those ideas for stories that pop into our heads while we are working on our main writing project. Such was the case here. Each of these stories invaded my “brain space” while I was working on the Freelan novel series. And they are just the start. The ideas keep coming. Check it out and let me know how you like it.
I would also greatly appreciate you posting a review on Amazon.
The Stories
Wind Down the Chimney —
As Halloween draws near, newlywed Jane Andrews hears a voice calling her name from the fireplace chimney in the living room. Things accelerate from there as an event from several generations ago poses a lethal threat.
The Rube Goldberg Murder Club —
Six club members discuss how to kill someone in a normally simple but purposely overcomplicated way, like a Rube Goldberg device for cracking an egg. Soon talk turns into action as one club member after another meets a death that would make Rube Goldberg proud.
Sand and Snow —
Kaara, a member of a nomadic tribe that roams their Saharan territory, is the Keeper of the Stone, said to kill any but her who touch it. She uses that stone and stories told to her by Thomas Clark, a Scottish archaeologist, for revenge against increasingly corrupted tribe members.
Not All VR Goggles Are Created Equal —
A pair of virtual reality goggles plays a role in several very odd deaths, starting with a wealthy, crotchety, and downright mean grandfather with a family to match.
“…definitely a terrifying horror story…” — The Brothers Krynn on Substack
“…a fun story, and the writing is excellent. The narrative description is crisp and highly visual and the dialogue is fluent and fluid, entirely believable.” — The National Fantasy Fan Federation
The Cornfield —
George and Sarah, an elderly farming couple, are ready to harvest their last crop of corn before retiring to Florida. On a hot August day George and farmhand Ed see those cornstalks swaying when there is no wind. The corn is gaining sentience and a determination to stop the harvest.
Sisters of the North Wind —
In a small town in northern Minnesota, Estelle, with no memory of herself, is befriended by spinster Daisy Johnson. Two years later, Estelle sees a woman’s face at the kitchen window of Daisy’s house and faints. Time for Daisy to help Estelle discover who she truly is.
“…a beautiful mythical fable…well-told, well-constructed, and just plain fun…crisp and vivid, and the dialogue just sparkles. A lot of writers say that dialogue is the hardest part of writing a story, but I think you’ve got the mastery of it.” — The National Fantasy Fan Federation
Mr. Dilby’s Library —
Josiah Dilby, from a long line of Dilbys, owns and runs a private library in the heart of a city with skyscrapers all around. The library basement archives is full of old books, some containing a secret. Dilby’s niece Kristie Dilby and police detective Ryan Strange seek to learn what that secret is and why people know better than to piss off Dilby, the Librarian.
The Boy Who Lived on a Mountain —
Brian “Stumps” Tracer and Jake Bachmann are spending their annual vacation climbing in the Himalayan Mountains in Nepal. One day as a snowstorm envelops the mountain they are climbing, Brian sees a Nepalese boy and chases him, ending up in a situation worse than that storm.
“Madame Destiny” —
Six months after his wife’s death, Cyril Blythe marries the receptionist from his business. They settle in the mansion Cyril inherited from his wife, and strange events begin. He reluctantly visits a psychic named “Madame Destiny” on his business partner Ham’s advice, and a plot unfolds.
The Bat King —
Laura Stone meets Aylesworth Delacroix on the night of the graduation party at the university in a Midwestern city. She soon learns he is really a special species of bat that can take human form. She and a local reporter get caught up in a battle between Aylesworth and a blood cult that targets him as its next victim.
