This edition of the writers list highlights folks who focus on Halloween-ish subject matter, part of Team Halloween (more info here). Never fear, though, others are included here as always. Give ’em a perusal and expand your reading horizons! [insert wicked cackle here]
If you know of anyone I should add, please comment below. Help spread the word!
NOTE: I cannot guarantee that people listed here do NOT use AI in some way (images and/or text) but I do my best. I have confirmed some. They are marked “dhc.” The worst part of using AI is when the user does not reveal this to the audience. Writing text and creating visuals is a very human skill. Some of us have worked long and hard to develop ours. Many of you are working on that now. The fakers drag us all down. We humans can’t let that happen.
dhw=definitely human written (might be using AI-generated images, though)
Please let me know if you wish to be designated as “dhw.”
The List in alphabetical order (fiction, non-fiction and a designer or two for your micropatronage):
What is micropatronage? See this article by The Delinquent Academic, along some other great essays and now a new serialized sci-fi story.
Pick and choose. And explore Substack. My list is far from complete. And I am happy to say that lots of these people don’t stoop to the fakery of AI (artificial intelligence) which should be called AP (advanced programming).
Wanna catch the eye of readers? A great way is to be bold and post in Notes links to your tomes (no matter how large or small), to your ’Stack, and even your author site!
If I’ve missed you here, please leave me a comment. If you don’t want to be tagged, please also comment or give me a DM.

More Ways to Be Seen!
The more ways for us writers to be seen, the better! My little list is just one small way. Here are some others so far:
NEW Soaring Twenties, a tri-weekly newsletter and monthly magazine run by a collective of creatives, collaborating to make the internet human again. Run by Thomas J. Bevan and Vanya Bagaev. Strictly for HUMAN creatives. No AI. Hooray!
The Library, curated by Winston Malone and @J.M. Elliott. Promotes writers on Substack and also those who are published. How to Submit. Also check out their Buy Indie page. Browse the Stacks by category.
https://thelinklibrary.substack.com/p/new-this-week-aed
Top in Fiction, run by Erica Drayton.
Literary Salon (includes Post Op and Freebookstore), started and run by Thaddeus Thomas. Go to his Chat for more info and also look for his Notes and Posts. For Freebookstore, you need a Bookfunnel account, which costs money. Contact Thaddeus for details. And it means you offer free copies of your books to people, which is a strategy used by authors who write book series.
The Tall Tales Fiction Critique Community, started and run by Addam Ledamyen.
Auraist, started and run by @Sean McNulty. Highlights books for your perusal. I still haven’t had time to give them a thorough examination (some stuff is behind a paywall). Check them out and let me know what you think.
The Booster Club, started and run by Jenna B. Neece. Read this post to see what they are about.
And on dru’s book musings, get her weekly list of new releases of mystery books! Here’s the latest.
Read More Books, run by Jeremy Anderberg. A place to discuss what you have read and possibly find other things to read.
How to support other writers here:
Restack something you enjoy
Subscribe, even as a free subscriber (there are still quite a few people hoping to make a living off their writing here, but they appreciate your eyeballs either way)
Follow here and on other social media
Publisher Spotlight
Your opportunities to get your work published are evolving. One of the latest is right on Substack, where people like these are seeking out your works and either presenting them in print or online (or both in some cases).
Stardust Press – Keyon Hejazi, Editor-in-chief (also a writer of Persian fantasy fiction) – don’t miss the August Call for Submissions
Written Tales Magazine – Kevin, Editor
Genre (Theme) Days
See my article: Publisher Agent Fiction Genres Defined, with downloadable PDF.
Fiction is divided into two main categories, or so I have seen on various sites that present themselves as authorities on the subject:
Genre (mystery, romance, sci-fi, drama, horror, historical, etc.)
Literary (usually anything that’s not of a specific genre and often considered to be more focused on ideas that plot, characters, etc., but I beg to differ)
These genre days are great opportunities to showcase your work and are also inspirational!
Here’s a list, showing the “host(s)” who often do a summary of the posts:
Funny Sun(ny)day – started by Addam Ledamyen who writes humor. No summary.
Macabre Monday – now hosted by John Coon, Jon T, Shaina Read, The Chronicler, and started by Jeff Kinnard
NEW! Mystery Monday – hosted by D.W. Dixon
Teaser Tuesday – started by Marco (knightsofautumncrown)
Terran Tuesday – hosted by The Black Knight, James Esparza, R. H. Snow
Warrior Wednesday – hosted by The Brothers Krynn
Readers/Writers Wednesday – I do this post, others welcome to post their own lists; the more, the merrier
Throwback Thursday – hosted and created by Redd Oscar
Thorny Thursday – hosted by Kathrine Elaine (summary done mid-month)
Sci-Friday – host unknown, started by Andrew Smith (aka Goatfury)
Sword & Saturday – hosted by The Brothers Krynn
And don’t forget that from now until midnight on October 31st, it’s Team Halloween time! Post your scary stories any day of the week!
As an author focused on literary fiction (my genre fiction is a side journey), I would like to connect with other Literary Fiction writers such as Madame Z.
